Former Big Brother Naija housemate Queen Atang has reacted emotionally to a heartbreaking scene in Kemi Adetiba’s Netflix series To Kill a Monkey, where the character Oboz, played by Bucci Franklin, is killed after being betrayed by his own ally.
The reality TV star shared a video on Instagram of herself crying uncontrollably as she watched the moment Oboz realised he had been sold out by Efe (played by William Benson) to a rival gang led by Teacher, portrayed by Chidi Mokeme.
Captioning the post, Mercy said the scene broke her, revealing it reminded her of her personal experiences with betrayal.
“Stop judging people who get upset and vent right away, they’re often the realest and kindest at heart. They express their pain in the moment… I speak from deep experience 💯,” she wrote.
“I’ve been judged so many times for how I react to hurt, based on how people treat me. Watching this film broke me. Even in the face of danger, he said, ‘Before you touch him, you’ll have to kill me first 🥹. You can’t touch my brother.’ … He was still holding on to his charm, trying to protect them both… until he realized his own brother had betrayed him,” she added.
Mercy said she wept because she understood what it felt like to fight hard for those she loves, only to be let down.
“If you ever betray me… I will vent. I will react. I will fight in my own way. But once it’s out of my system, it ends there. Now I’m crying myself to sleep. I won’t be getting over this movie anytime soon,” she concluded.
To Kill a Monkey premiered on Netflix on July 18 and follows the story of Efemini, a young man lured into cybercrime by a friend, only to face unexpected betrayal.
The crime-thriller series stars William Benson, Bucci Franklin, Stella Damasus, Bimbo Akintola, Chidi Mokeme and Sunshine Rosman.
Oboz’s death scene has become one of the most talked-about moments in the eight-episode series, with viewers praising Bucci Franklin’s performance and the emotional weight of his final moments.
