Former Big Brother Naija housemate Anita Ukah has addressed swirling rumours and criticism surrounding her past relationship with fellow ex-housemate Topher, especially in light of the couple gifts they received during their time in the reality show.
Taking to Snapchat, Anita spoke candidly to clear up misunderstandings and to set the record straight about the nature of their relationship, emphasising that while it was genuine and rooted in real emotions, it ultimately didn’t last.
She said:
“Since the reunion aired, I’ve seen and heard the conversations happening online, and I feel it’s important to address them directly, out of respect for those who’ve supported me genuinely, without conditions. When I left the Big Brother house, there was real curiosity around our relationship. And that curiosity was valid. We did give it a chance but as with many things in life, somethings work and somethings don’t, and if everything was aired, there would have been more clarity on this.”
Anita went further to reject any insinuations of deceit, manipulation, or performance for personal gain, stressing that honesty and transparency are core to her character.
“There was no deception, no manipulation, and certainly no performance for the purpose of benefits. Anyone who knows me or has followed my journey understands that I move with intention and honesty, even when it’s uncomfortable.”
She continued:
“The idea that I ‘pretended’ to be in a relationship to receive benefits is both hurtful and incorrect. I’ve never asked for support under false pretenses, and I deeply value the trust placed in me by my supporters, and everyone dear I’ve walked this journey with. My name, my work ethic, and my values are non-negotiable, and I protect them fiercely.”
To fans who have shown concern, Anita expressed gratitude, while acknowledging those who might feel let down.
“I appreciate those who’ve reached out with concern and support. And to those who’ve felt disappointed or misled, I want you to know: I get it, your feelings are valid and matter to me. But I will always choose transparency over performance, and I will never play with the love or loyalty of the people who hold me up.”
Anita and Topher were both contestants in Big Brother Naija Season 9: Level Up, which premiered in July 2024. The duo quickly caught the attention of viewers with their friendship and chemistry inside the house, prompting fans to “ship” them as a couple.
They were among the housemates who received couple-themed gifts from fans, gestures typically sent by viewers rooting for romantic pairings. Outside the house, some supporters continued to send joint gifts and support the pair as a unit.
Although Anita and Topher never officially confirmed a relationship while on the show, their closeness continued after the season ended, sparking hope from fans that their bond had turned romantic.
As of press time, Topher has yet to issue a public comment about Anita’s statement.
