Bashir Ahmad urges arrest of US missionary over Jos attack

Bashir Ahmad

Bashir Ahmad, former personal assistant on new media to late former president Muhammadu Buhari, has called on authorities to investigate and arrest US missionary Alex Babir following a video he shared on recent attacks in Jos, Plateau State.

The call came hours after Mr Babir posted a video addressing President Bola Tinubu over fresh attacks in Plateau State. More than 12 people were killed in an attack on Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area on Sunday.

In the video, Babir criticised the federal government over the killings and insecurity in the country.

“Mr President, what is happening in Plateau State is not acceptable. People are being killed and nothing is being done to stop it. The government must take responsibility and act to protect citizens,” he said.

Reacting in a post on X on Monday, Mr Ahmad said Babir has been moving around and spreading messages he described as hate and attempts to incite violence. He said security agencies should take steps to investigate and act where necessary.

“This is a strong call on the relevant authorities to urgently investigate the activities of this foreign national who has been moving around communities affected by violence, spreading hate and attempting to incite violence against Nigerians of diverse backgrounds,” he said.

He also said authorities should ensure accountability in order to maintain peace and public order.

In a follow-up post, Bashir Ahmad warned Nigerians against being influenced by what he described as dangerous rhetoric, saying the consequences of unrest would affect citizens.

Babir has been involved in activities in communities affected by violence, including support for displaced persons and rebuilding efforts. His work has drawn attention in some of the affected areas, where he has also spoken on killings and called for justice.

Reactions to his activities have been mixed, with some people describing his work as humanitarian, while others have raised questions about his presence and influence in conflict-affected communities.
