Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has said Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed visited his residence to ask him to postpone the recent national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Minister Wike said Governor Mohammed made the request during a late-night visit to his house in Abuja, where he urged him to suspend the convention to allow reconciliation within the party.
He disclosed this on Friday during his monthly media chat in Abuja.
Wike said he declined the request, noting that the process leading to the convention had already taken place through party structures and judicial considerations.
According to him, Mohammed had earlier reached out through his aide to arrange a meeting and they later met after he returned to town.
Wike said Mohammed asked, “Can we put off the convention so that we will be able to sit down and discuss?”
He said he responded that the request could not be granted.
“I said no that would be wrong because you can’t shoot yourself and expect me to shoot myself too,” he said.
Wike added that the party had followed legal and internal processes before the convention.
“The court said do not hold this convention, you set up a committee made up of prominent Nigerians and they came up with a resolution,” he said.
He also said the committee made recommendations to the party, but some members did not accept them.
“You refused that advice and accused the committee which you set up of being compromised,” he said.
Wike noted that his faction proceeded with its position and sought validation through the Federal High Court in Ibadan, while others did not follow the same route.
He said his group remains open to dialogue with aggrieved members and that reconciliation is still possible within the PDP.
“Politics is like football, it’s not hard to reconcile. We have had our differences… let’s be sincere, it’s not too late,” he said.
Wike added that the party still has the capacity to perform in the 2027 elections if members resolve their differences and work together.
