AY clarifies comments after backlash over Anthony Joshua road crash

Comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, known as AY, has clarified his comments following public reactions to a social media post he made after a fatal road accident involving British Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua.

The accident occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun in Ogun State. Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle reportedly lost control while overtaking and crashed into a stationary truck. Two members of his team, strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Kevin Lateef Ayodele, died at the scene. Joshua sustained minor injuries and is said to be in stable condition.

Following the incident, AY shared a post that many Nigerians interpreted as blaming the government for the crash. The comedian later issued a clarification, saying his comments were misunderstood.

“Let me clarify, with respect. Yes, reckless driving costs lives. Personal responsibility on the road is crucial and must always be acknowledged. But my post last night was never about excusing recklessness or blaming one party for one incident,” AY wrote.

He explained that while individual actions matter, broader issues such as poor road conditions, weak traffic enforcement and inadequate emergency response systems also contribute to fatal accidents. “Two things can be true at the same time. People can make wrong decisions. And a country can still fail its people,” he added.

AY stressed that his post was not intended as an attack on any individual or institution but as a call for improved safety measures and accountability. “A country that cannot protect its people is a country in urgent need of accountability,” he said.

The accident has drawn reactions across Nigeria and beyond, with several figures from the boxing and entertainment worlds offering condolences to Joshua over the loss of his team members.
