The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who died on Sunday at the age of 91, will be buried on Monday at 4 pm in Ogbagba Court, Igbeba, Ijebu Ode.
A statement issued by Prince Adedire Adetona on behalf of the royal family described the late monarch as a “courageous leader, a revered hero, and a symbol of dignity and strength,” adding that Oba Adetona lived a formidable life in service to his people.
“With deep sorrow but profound gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, The Awujale of Ijebuland, Ogbagba II,” the statement read.
The family also urged mourners and guests to proceed directly to the burial venue, where condolences would be received.
Oba Adetona died just hours after the announcement of the death of his longtime friend and former president, Muhammadu Buhari.
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960 and reigned for more than 64 years, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving monarchs.
In recent weeks, concerns over his health had surfaced after his absence at the 2025 edition of Ojude Oba, held on June 8.
At the time, palace spokesman Fassy Yusuf confirmed that the Awujale had recently been discharged from a Lagos hospital and was resting at home.
“He is just taking some time to rest. At over 90, it is normal to take a break. It is nothing to worry about,” Yusuf told reporters.
His wife, Olori Kemi Adetona, represented him at the event, receiving dignitaries and age-grade groups who paid homage.
The monarch was renowned for his strong advocacy for justice, his fearless opinions on national matters and his instrumental role in elevating the annual Ojude Oba festival into a globally recognised cultural event.
