Segun Awolowo, the only son of Abah Folawiyo and grandson of the late statesman Obafemi Awolowo, has died.
The family announced his death in a statement on Thursday, describing him as a husband, father and grandfather.
The statement said he remained committed to his family, work and country.
“He was the world’s most phenomenal husband, father, and grandfather – steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family,” the statement read.
“A painfully loyal servant to Nigeria, he dedicated his life to the service of his country with vision, integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment.”
Mr Awolowo’s family said he was dedicated to public service and Nigeria’s economic interests.
“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement added.
Media mogul and politician Dele Momodu also mourned him in a post on Instagram.
He wrote, “Good night my very dear Brother OLUSEGUN AWOLOWO (aka OMO BABA, as I fondly called you)… What a devastating news to receive here in faraway Montenegro!! When you sent me this picture of us out of the blue, I didn’t realize you were sending me a subliminal message… Wow. May your beautiful soul rest in peace SEGEEE…”
Segun Awolowo was a lawyer and former executive director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), where he worked on the promotion of Nigeria’s non-oil export sector.
He held the position from 2013 to 2021.
Born on September 27, 1963, Awolowo was born two months after the death of his father, Segun Awolowo Sr., who died in a car accident along the old Ibadan–Lagos road at age 25.
In July 2021, he was elected President of the National Trade Promotion Organizations (TPOs) representing ECOWAS member states.
He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.
