Atiku says OPL 245 dispute still in court

Atiku Abubakar

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has said the Oil Prospecting Licence (OPL 245) dispute has not been resolved.

He reacted to claims by the administration of President Bola Tinubu that the matter has been settled.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr Atiku said the case is still before the courts.

He cited a pre-action notice by Malabu Oil and Gas Limited as proof that the dispute remains unresolved.

“Contrary to official pronouncements, it is clear that the matter is far from resolved and remains the subject of multiple subsisting legal proceedings,” he said.

He added that cases related to the oil block are still before the Supreme Court and the Federal High Court.

Atiku said Malabu, a stakeholder in the oil block, was not involved in any settlement process.

“Malabu was neither consulted nor involved in any purported negotiation or settlement process,” he said.

He said excluding a stakeholder while cases are in court raises issues about due process.

Atiku also reacted to reports that part of Nigeria’s joint venture assets under the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited could be sold.

He warned that any such move without transparency would affect the country’s future.

He called on the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers to monitor developments and take action where necessary.
