Singer Asake has met with Ghana’s President John Mahama in Accra on Tuesday and appealed for leniency for a man who was arrested after firing a gun during celebrations linked to the artiste’s recent visit.

The meeting took place at the Supercar Spectacle Sponsors Appreciation event following Asake’s headline performance at the AfroFuture Festival at El Wak Stadium on December 28. Several Ghanaian public figures including actor John Dumelo and businessman Ibrahima Mahama were also present.

In a clip shared online, President Mahama asked about the incident, saying, “So he is the one the guy fired the gun for?” His comment drew laughter when Asake’s team confirmed that the man had fired shots in apparent celebration of the singer’s performance. Mahama added, “And he ended up in trouble.”

Asake expressed regret and spoke up on the man’s behalf, describing the action as a moment of excitement. He asked the president to show mercy. In response, Mahama said, “Don’t worry about it. The law is the law.”

The man seen in the viral video was later identified as Abubakari Sadick, also known as Cyborg. He was arrested on December 29 after a video showed him firing multiple live rounds into the air with a rifle during street celebrations after the AfroFuture performance. Police recovered the firearm during the arrest.

Authorities said the arrest was carried out under Ghana’s firearms and public order laws, stressing that licensed gun ownership does not permit public discharge. The suspect was held in custody while investigations were concluded.

On December 31, a court fined Sadick GH¢24,000 after he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession and discharge of a firearm during a public event, with an option of imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
