Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says Nigerian-British boxer Anthony Joshua is in a stable condition and receiving medical care following a road traffic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, December 29.

The crash occurred around midday and involved a Toyota Lexus jeep conveying Joshua and three other passengers.

Two passengers died in the accident.

They were identified as Ayodele Kelvin, 36, a Nigerian-British citizen and Gami Sina, 36, a British citizen.

The Ogun State Government confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

In a statement issued by the special adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government said Governor Abiodun visited the hospital where Joshua was receiving treatment shortly after receiving news of the accident.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu later joined him at the hospital.

Both governors reportedly remained there for several hours to oversee the situation and ensure Joshua received appropriate medical care.

Speaking on the incident, Abiodun said he personally monitored Joshua’s treatment alongside Governor Sanwo Olu.

“As soon as I was informed, I headed straight to the hospital and was later joined by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. We both took charge of the situation, oversaw Anthony Joshua’s care, and remained at the hospital for over seven hours,” the governor said.

Other officials who visited the hospital included the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade.

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, was fully briefed on the incident.

According to government sources, the president spoke separately with Joshua, his mother and Governor Abiodun, during which he conveyed his sympathies and condolences.

The British High Commission was formally notified.

The Deputy Head of Mission, Simon Field, visited the hospital and met with Joshua and the two governors.
