Anambra govt condemns killing of entrepreneur Ifesinachi Onyekere, vows justice

The Anambra State Government has condemned the brutal killing of businessman Ifesinachi Onyekere, popularly known as “Fish Magnet”, describing it as “dastardly and heart-wrenching.”

Mr Onyekere, who was the only son of the Anambra State All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) woman leader, Esther Onyekere, was abducted on the night of Saturday, July 26, at his residence in Ezinifite, Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area.

He was later found dead.

In a condolence visit on Sunday, the state commissioner for information, Law Mefor, expressed the government’s sorrow over the killing and assured the grieving family that efforts were underway to ensure justice is served.

“The death of Fish Magnet is an affront to the Solution Government’s new security architecture,” Mefor said.

“We are consoled by the fact that the police are on the heels of the perpetrators. The vehicle used in his abduction has already been recovered. Nobody can commit such a heinous act in Anambra and get away with it.”

The commissioner, speaking during a visit to the bereaved mother, stated that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is committed to strengthening the state’s security apparatus, particularly through new outfits like Agunechemba and Operation Udo Ga-Achi.

“The mother will get justice, the family will get justice, and Anambra will get justice,” he pledged.

“Security has significantly improved in Anambra since the launch of the new architecture on February 18, 2025, and any individual threatening the peace of the state must contend with our security teams.”

Also on the condolence visit was the chairman of Nnewi South Local Government Area, Van Ezeogidi, who joined in consoling the Onyekere family.

The killing of the fish dealer has sparked outrage among residents, celebrities and political associates, who described him as a hardworking entrepreneur and devoted son.
