Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially switched political allegiance, announcing his move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement came on Friday in Uyo, following weeks of speculation and months of consultations.
Speaking to an audience of reporters and supporters, Eno explained that his decision was not made lightly. “For some time now, there’s been a lot of talk about whether I would leave the PDP,” he said. “It’s a question that has sparked plenty of opinions. Today, I’m here to put those speculations to rest.”
The governor revealed that his choice came after three months of intense discussions with political stakeholders across the state. “I’ve consulted widely because I believe such decisions shouldn’t be rushed. Respecting the voices of those who have supported me on this journey was very important,” he added.
Earlier on Friday, Eno made his resignation from the PDP official. “This morning, I submitted a formal letter of resignation to my ward chairman. Copies were also sent to the state and national leaders of the party,” he said. Eno expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it provided, saying, “I want to thank the party for its support and the chance to serve Akwa Ibom under its banner for the past two years.”
The governor described his decision to join the APC as a response to changes in the political landscape. “We must recognize when times are changing and adapt,” he noted. “This decision aligns with my vision for Akwa Ibom and the direction I believe we need to take.”
Governor Eno also reflected on the importance of staying true to shared values amid political shifts. Quoting the Dalai Lama, he said, “We should always be open to change, but not let go of our shared values.”
