Akpabio denies reports of collapse, treatment in London

Senate President Godswill Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied claims that he collapsed and was flown to London for medical treatment.

The report, which circulated on Monday, suggested that Senator Akpabio was airlifted on a private jet to a London hospital after collapsing on December 10.

It also claimed that several senators had travelled to London to check on him and that doctors advised him to step down from the Senate to focus on his health.

Kenny Okolugbo, Consultant on Communications and Strategy to the Senate President, dismissed the report as false.

“It’s a lie, fake news,” he said.

Following the circulation of the claims, lawmakers in the Senate called for an investigation into the source of the story.

During plenary on Tuesday, a point of order raised by lawmaker Titus Zam described the reports as unacceptable and warned that misinformation could cause unrest.

Mr Zam urged authorities to arrest and prosecute those responsible.

Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, also commented on the challenges of regulating media content, describing some reports as “garbage in, garbage out.”
