Super Eagles striker Akor Adams has dedicated his first goal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to his mother, who was hospitalised on the morning of Nigeria’s round-of-16 match against Mozambique.

Adams opened his goal account at the tournament in the 70th minute, completing Nigeria’s 4–0 win over Mozambique on Monday.

He also provided the assist for Ademola Lookman’s opening goal and contributed to the second goal, which was scored by Victor Osimhen.

Adams played 86 minutes of the match.

Speaking in the mixed zone after the game, Adams explained that his mother had been admitted to the hospital earlier in the day.

“The goal is dedicated to my mum. She is supposed to be here, but she is in a hospital. She was admitted this morning, but she is much better now,” he said.

The goal takes Adams’ tally for Nigeria to three goals and three assists in eight matches.

He made his Super Eagles debut in October 2025 during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, scoring in a 2–1 win over Lesotho.

Adams also acknowledged the contributions of his teammates in Monday’s match.

“I am happy for the team. Victor had a fantastic game, and Lookman had a fantastic game. We came out with a victory, and we are happy,” he said.

Nigeria will advance to the next round of the tournament following the 4–0 victory over Mozambique.
