Aisha Yesufu calls out Akpabio over Natasha Akpoti’s suspension

Socio-political activist Aisha Yesufu has called out Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the continued suspension of Kogi Central senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Yesufu wrote, “It is time to ask Akpabio WETIN?”

Her comment came after the National Assembly rejected Akpoti-Uduaghan’s plan to return to plenary.

In a letter dated Thursday, September 4 and signed by the acting clerk to the National Assembly, Yahaya Danzaria, the Senate said the suspension of the senator would remain in force until the Court of Appeal delivers judgement on her case.

The Senate explained that while Akpoti-Uduaghan notified it of her intention to resume on September 4, her suspension took effect from March 6 and was set for six months.

“The matter is before the Court of Appeal, therefore no administrative action can be taken until a verdict is delivered,” the letter read in part.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, for refusing to accept a change of her designated seat during plenary.

The suspension, recommended by the Senate Committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions, also withdrew her aides, office privileges and salaries.

The lawmaker maintained that the suspension was linked to her petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim the Senate dismissed.

She later challenged the suspension in court and secured a judgement she claimed favoured her recall.

In July, her attempt to re-enter the National Assembly led to a standoff, as security operatives prevented her from gaining access despite the presence of supporters outside the complex.
