Comedian and event promoter Olanrewaju Gregory, also known as Larry J, says artificial intelligence cannot take over comedy because it lacks the emotional timing and human interaction required to make people laugh.
“AI can try, but it can’t capture human timing, voice, and emotional switch. Comedy is human,” he said while speaking about the role of AI in creative fields.
Larry J made the remarks as he announced the fourth edition of his annual family comedy show, set for December 25 at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. The Christmas Day event is designed to offer entertainment suitable for all ages.
On the planned comedy competition, he said the aim is to support emerging comedians. “The idea is to support our craft and give talented comedians who are still looking for platforms a chance to shine,” Larry J said.
He also explained that performers will be carefully selected to ensure their material is appropriate for families. “We are ensuring the content is wholesome so families can attend without worry,” he said.
The event will feature well known comedians including Kenny Blaq, Forever, Damola, Judicious and Phronesis. Music is expected from DJ Bayo with additional dance performances and surprise acts.
Over the years, Larry J’s showcase has included performers with disabilities and given opportunities to children from underserved communities. This year he said he plans to highlight children from Isale Eko involved in artistic and creative pursuits. “It’s about letting them be seen, appreciated, and supported,” he said.
His comments come amid wider industry discussions about artificial intelligence tools. Experts say these tools can assist in creating content but often struggle with the nuance, timing and emotional response that live comedy requires.
