AGN hails Okpebholo for appointing Mercy Johnson as special adviser

Abubakar Yakubu

President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abubakar Yakubu, has commended Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State for naming Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson‑Okojie as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy.

Speaking at the Guild’s national headquarters in Abuja, Yakubu said the appointment reflects Nollywood’s growing role in governance, civic engagement, and national development. He added that “to appoint one of our distinguished members as Special Adviser just months later is a source of pride to the Guild and the entire creative ecosystem.”

He also highlighted what he described as Governor Okpebholo’s steady support for the creative sector, pointing to the AGN National Conference held in Edo State in December with delegates from more than 30 states. Yakubu said Mercy’s public appeal, communication skills and grassroots connection make her suited for the role.

The appointment was formally announced on February 19 in a statement by the Secretary to the Edo State Government, Musa Ikhilor. The statement said Okpebholo approved the appointment as part of efforts to strengthen communication between government and citizens and encourage wider public participation in policies and programmes.

The communique described Mercy as “an accomplished Nigerian actress, producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist” with a film career spanning nearly two decades and including appearances in over 200 films. It also referenced her humanitarian work through the Mercy Johnson-Okojie Foundation, which focuses on women’s empowerment, child welfare, education support, and healthcare outreach.

Mercy’s husband, Prince Okojie, serves in the House of Representatives for Esan North East/South East Federal Constituency of Edo State, according to reports covering the appointment.

In a message posted on her official Instagram page after the announcement, the actress thanked the governor and reflected on her new role. She wrote that the appointment “is not just a call to serve, it is a call to connect, to listen and to advocate with purpose.”

She added that she accepts the responsibility “with humility, dedication, and an unshakable commitment to service” and will work to deepen civic engagement and strengthen trust between the government and the people of Edo State.

Governors across Nigeria have in recent years appointed actors and entertainers to advisory roles in efforts to bring public engagement and communications closer to citizens.
