Veteran actor Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, has scored a box office hit with Her Excellency, which grossed N24.5 million in its opening weekend.
His son and producer of the film, Femi Adebayo, shared the update on Monday in an Instagram post celebrating the film’s early success.
“N24.5 MILLION AND COUNTING! Her Excellency just shut down the weekend as the highest-grossing Nollywood film — and it’s only getting started!” Femi wrote.
“From the box office, the numbers don’t lie — Her Excellency, Sola Sobowale and her all-star cabinet are ruling the screens! Thank you, Nigeria! Now let’s take this even higher — see Her Excellency in cinemas nationwide today!”
The movie premiered on June 29 and began showing in cinemas across Nigeria on July 4. It features Sola Sobowale in the lead role, supported by Bimbo Akintola, Ibrahim Chatta, Fathia Balogun, Dele Odule, Muyiwa Ademola and Lateef Adedimeji.
Directed and produced by Femi Adebayo, the political drama is a tribute to his father’s 60-year contribution to the Nigerian film industry.
“Producing this film is a heartfelt tribute to my father, a man whose dedication to the film industry has been a guiding light in my life,” Femi said in an earlier statement.
Her Excellency tells the story of a woman who defies the odds to become the first female governor of a fictional Nigerian state.
