Ade Adefeko has resigned his position as Botswana’s honorary consul to Nigeria.

The High Commission of the Republic of Botswana in Nigeria announced the resignation in a press release issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Mr Adefeko submitted his resignation on November 26, 2025, citing increasingly demanding professional commitments that made it difficult for him to continue to devote the required time to consular duties.

The resignation took effect in December 2025 and was accepted by Botswana’s Ministry of International Relations.

Adefeko’s resignation was formalised through a Letter of Termination issued on December 24, 2025, by Botswana’s minister of international relations, Phenyo Butale, in line with Article 25 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

In his resignation letter, addressed to Butale through Botswana’s high commissioner to Nigeria, Philda Nani Kereng, Adefeko said, “This decision has become necessary due to increasingly demanding professional commitments, which now make it difficult for me to continue to dedicate the time and attention required for the discharge of consular responsibilities, as my standards require.”

He added, “It has been an honour and privilege to serve and contribute, in my modest capacity, to strengthening the Botswana–Nigeria relations.”

Adefeko also thanked Botswana’s President, Duma Boko and the foreign minister for the opportunity to promote bilateral relations between both countries.

Kereng acknowledged the resignation and thanked Adefeko for his service to the high commission.

The High Commission noted that honorary consuls are appointed by foreign governments to provide consular services and promote bilateral relations in cities without full diplomatic missions.

They usually serve on a voluntary or part-time basis while maintaining other professional engagements.

The commission said Ade Adefeko concluded his tenure cordially and offered to support a smooth transition when a new honorary consul is appointed.

Adefeko served as Botswana’s honorary consul from 2020 to 2025 and was the first Nigerian to occupy the position.

His successor has yet to be announced.
