Actress Ajara Lasisi, popularly known as Aunty Ajara, has died after a period of illness.

She died in the early hours of Thursday, according to her family.

The news was announced by her brother, Ridwan Lasisi, in a video message in which he appreciated members of the public and colleagues in the film industry for their support during her illness.

“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on,” he said.

“All the families, we are using this period to appreciate you all. We appreciate the president and all industry members.

“We also use this opportunity to appeal to those sending money not to send it anymore. The one we are contributing for her sake is no more. Thank you so much. We do not want you to send money into that account again.”

Ajara’s health condition became public knowledge shortly before her death after actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke and other actors appealed for financial support on her behalf. Oshodi-Oke had disclosed that the actress was hospitalised and in critical condition, relying on oxygen support while undergoing treatment.

Aunty Ajara was known in the Yoruba film industry for playing maternal and supporting roles in several productions. She appeared in films such as Gingerrr, Queen Lateefah and Isiti, where she became familiar to audiences for her character portrayals.

Last year, the actress spoke publicly about a personal loss, revealing that she had once lost a child, an experience she shared while reflecting on challenges in her life.

Her death has since drawn reactions from colleagues and fans within the Yoruba movie industry, many of whom have continued to pay tribute to her contributions to Nollywood and her years of work on screen.
