Actor Stanley Amandi has been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.

Mr Amandi was taken into custody alongside several Nigerian military officers accused of planning to violently remove the Tinubu administration from power.

According to reports, the actor was arrested in September 2025, although details of his alleged involvement only recently became public.

He was described as having been “hired to play the role of a propagandist by the alleged coupists who planned to assassinate top government officials.”

Officials familiar with the matter said the alleged plotters had identified several leaders as targets, including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that investigations into the matter have been concluded and forwarded to the appropriate authorities in line with existing regulations.

The military said the probe was “conducted in accordance with established military procedures” and examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the personnel involved.

It added that the findings identified “a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” describing such actions as inconsistent with the ethics and professional standards of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Sources familiar with the case said suspects will face different legal processes based on their status. Serving military officers are expected to be tried by military tribunals, while civilians, including Mr Amandi, will be prosecuted in civil courts.

Stanley Amandi is known in the Nigerian film industry as an actor, production manager and director. His works include The Album, Tiger King, Cornerstone, and a 2024 film titled Once Upon a Dream, in which he appeared as an actor.
