Activist and secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF) Abiodun Aremu has died after being hit by a vehicle near his residence in Ota, Ogun State.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Witnesses said Aremu was crossing the road when he was struck.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where efforts to revive him failed.
He died at the age of 65.
Following his death, his family and the labour movement have agreed to shift his burial to October 23 to enable the movement to honour him.
In a statement issued on behalf of the labour movement, former secretary-general of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity and ex-acting general secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Owei Lakemfa, said the new date would allow for proper mobilisation and attendance.
He said the burial would now hold on Thursday, October 23, at Number 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
In an earlier tribute, Mr Lakemfa said Aremu played key roles in the Labour–Civil Society Coalition and the Kolagbodi Memorial Foundation.
He also credited him with helping to establish the Amilcar Cabral Ideological School, the Nigeria Movement for the Liberation of Western Sahara and the Nigerian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba.
Lakemfa said Aremu’s legacy would endure through the movements and institutions he helped to build.
Also reacting, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress Omoyele Sowore mourned Aremu in a post on Facebook.
He described Aremu as “a revolutionary senior comrade and mentor,” adding that his “courage, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to justice and liberation” would be remembered.
“May his soul rest in power, and may his legacy continue to inspire the struggle for a freer, fairer, and just world,” Sowore wrote.
