Access Bank pays tribute to Herbert Wigwe two years after death

Access Bank has paid tribute to its late former group chief executive officer Herbert Wigwe two years after his death.

In an Instagram post shared on Monday, the bank said Wigwe’s absence remains felt across the organisation.

“Two years on, the absence of Dr. Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe, CFR, remains deeply felt,” the post read.

The bank described Wigwe as a key figure in its growth and leadership direction.

“A visionary leader, he shaped Access with courage, clarity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. His legacy lives on in the values we uphold, the standards we protect, and the future we continue to build,” Access Bank said.

The bank also remembered Wigwe’s wife, Doreen, and their son, Chizi, who died alongside him.

“Today, we also remember his beloved wife, Doreen, and their son, Chizi. Their loss is profound, and they remain forever in our hearts,” the post added.

Wigwe, his wife and son died in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024, near Nipton, California, United States, while they were travelling to attend the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.

Also involved in the accident were former Nigerian Exchange Group Plc chairman Abimbola Ogunbanjo and two crew members.

The remains of Wigwe, his wife and son were repatriated to Nigeria and buried in his hometown, Isiokpo, Rivers State, on March 9,

Wigwe was widely known for his role in transforming Access Bank into one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, including its expansion across Africa and other markets.

He was 57 years old at the time of his death.
