Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) Abike Dabiri-Erewa says the Nigerian government has begun evacuating citizens from Iran as the conflict involving Israel and the United States continues.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said Nigerians who want to leave Iran are being escorted by officials of the Nigerian embassy to the border with Armenia.
She said Nigerian officials are stationed at the border to receive the citizens crossing out of the country.
According to her, no Nigerian has been reported killed or injured since the conflict began.
Dabiri-Erewa stated that the evacuation is ongoing for Nigerians who have indicated interest in leaving the country.
She did not disclose the number of Nigerians currently in Iran or how many have crossed the border since the process started.
The evacuation comes 11 days after fighting escalated between Israel and Iran following military strikes involving the United States.
Figures released by Iran’s health ministry show that more than 1,300 people have been killed in the country since the attacks began, while over 12,000 others have been injured.
The ministry said those affected include people aged between eight months and 88 years.
The ministry also reported that health workers were among those affected, with 11 deaths and 55 injuries recorded.
In Israel, the health ministry said at least 13 people have been killed and 1,929 injured due to attacks from Iran since the start of the conflict.
Authorities in Lebanon also reported 394 deaths and said more than 500,000 people have been displaced following attacks linked to the conflict.
Meanwhile, US president Donald Trump said on Monday that the war could end soon but not within the week.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Iran would determine when the conflict ends.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also said there would be no discussion about a ceasefire while attacks by the United States and Israel continue.
