Abia State Government on Thursday held a state burial service in honour of the late evangelist Uma Ukpai at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia.
Evang Ukpai, who was born in Abia State, died on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80.
He was the founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association and a founding member of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria.
Speaking at the service, Governor Alex Otti said people should consider how they want to be remembered after death. He said Ukpai’s life should serve as a reference point for public conduct.
Otti said the state organised the burial service to recognise Ukpai’s contributions to Abia State, Nigeria and other parts of the world. He also urged the family not to mourn without hope.
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State Umo Eno was represented by his deputy Akon Eyakenyi. He described Ukpai as a visionary and said he completed his work in faith.
The National Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria Mosy Madugba said Uma Ukpai served as a unifying figure among gospel ministers. He said the fellowship placed its flag on the coffin during the service.
In a sermon, the President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria Francis Wale Oke, said Ukpai focused on service to God and people.
The first son of the deceased Chidi Uma thanked the state government and other attendees for their support.
The event was attended by Peter Obi, Doye Diri, members of the National Assembly, members of state assemblies, traditional rulers and clerics.
