Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Wednesday flagged off the distribution of $250,000 (N350 million) interest-free loans to 1,000 residents of Kwara State to support small business clusters, strengthen local economies and promote sustainable development.
Beneficiaries were drawn from community interest groups across the state, with each group receiving $25,000 under the initiative.
The programme is supported by the World Bank through the Community Revolving Fund and implemented under the Kwara Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes project (ACReSAL).
Governor AbdulRazaq said the partnership is designed to improve livelihoods and boost economic activities at the grassroots level, urging beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly and repay them to allow others to benefit.
“This World Bank-supported initiative has been designed to provide our women, youth, farmers, and cooperatives with access to resources that will enable them to create wealth, generate employment, and uplift households. Hence, it is a practical step towards reducing poverty,” he said at the launch in Ilorin.
“I congratulate all the pioneer beneficiaries. You are leading the way with these dedicated funds, which you would be required to refund to enable it to reach more lives.”
Commissioner for environment and chairman of the steering committee for ACReSAL, Nafisat Musa Buge, said the success of the programme depends on proper use and repayment of the loans.
“Today is not just about the distribution of funds; it is about planting another seed of hope, empowerment, and sustainable growth in our community,” she said.
She added that the programme has also provided potable water to some rural communities in the state.
State project coordinator Shamsideen Aregbe said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development and shared prosperity, while acknowledging the role of development partners and stakeholders.
Emir of Shonga Haliru Yahaya commended the governor for supporting community development, noting that his community has benefited from the programme and other projects.
A representative of the beneficiaries, Mrs Abdulkareem Olapeju, thanked the government for the initiative, describing it as life-changing.
