The African Action Congress (AAC) has condemned what it described as sexist remarks directed at its Anambra governorship candidate, Chioma Ifemeludike, following reactions to her viral campaign photos.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye, on Wednesday, the party said, “Our candidate, a vibrant and ideologically clear woman, is being judged by her outfit choice and physical features rather than the quality of her ideas.”
AAC noted that the attacks reflected the deep-rooted patriarchy in Nigerian politics, saying, “The sexist jokes remain condemned but are not surprising because even the National Assembly, a supposed model of national representation, has become a house of sexist jokes.”
The party added that women in politics face double scrutiny, stressing that society often forces them to prove competence while meeting expectations of “acceptable femininity.” It urged voters to focus on ideas and competence instead of appearances.
“When we reduce a female candidate to her body or her clothing, we silence her vision and reinforce the message that women’s worth is tied to their physical appearance, not ability,” the statement said.
Earlier, QEDNG reported that Chioma shared campaign photos in a black leather gown with spaghetti straps, declaring herself “the best candidate” for the November 8 election. The post stirred mixed reactions online.
Defending herself, the actress-turned-politician wrote: “Do not let them gaslight or confuse you. Yes, we can have beauty and brains in one body. Ndi Anambra must vote for social change.”
Chioma, the only female contender in the race, has continued her campaign across the state, promising reforms in education, infrastructure and youth empowerment if elected.
