Filmmaker and culture activist, Kunle Afolayan, has accused the Nigerian film industry of reinforcing the perception that African traditional religion is evil.
Speaking in an interview with DJ Abass in London on Thursday, the October 1 director said there is a lot of misrepresentation of traditional worship in Nollywood films.
According to him, “if you mention a babalawo (Ifa priest), people will run” thinking the person is an evil priest.
In his words, the way shrines, chants and other elements of traditional worship is presented, “is to a large extent misrepresentation.”
He said the misrepresentation also extends to Christianity and Islam.
Without laying claim to a particular religion, Kunle said those with a platform to correct the wrong impressions created about African religion should do so.
