South-west presidential aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC), governors and some party leaders met on Friday at the Lagos House in Marina.
The meeting was convened by Bisi Akande, a former APC national chairman and former governor of Osun, and Olusegun Osoba, a former Ogun governor.
Those present at the meeting included Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Lagos governor Bola Tinubu, former Ogun governor Ibikunle Amosun, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Two presidential aspirants from the south-west, Pastor Tunde Bakare, and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; and the Deputy Majority Leader of the Senate, Ajayi Boroffice, who have all purchased presidential forms, were absent at the meeting.
The governors of Lagos, Osun, Ogun and Ekiti, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Gboyega Oyetola, Dapo Abiodun and Kayode Fayemi respectively were present.
Also present at the meeting were the ministers of works and housing, trade and industry and investment, and interior, Babatunde Fashola, Adeniyi Adebayo and Rauf Aregbesola respectively and a host of other APC leaders in the zone.
It was gathered that the meeting failed to agree to having a consensus candidate. It also resolved that name calling and other personal attacks should not be encouraged by the aspirants and their supporters.
Aspirants were asked to work with whomever among them emerges as the party’s candidate for the presidential election.
“The issue of betrayal was put to rest as the elders affirmed that everyone who desired to run for any political office whatsoever was not encumbered in any way at all,” a source at the meeting told PUNCH.
