Amokachi appointed coach of Finnish club

Former Super Eagles coach, Daniel Amokachi, has penned a year’s deal with Finnish side, JS Hercules, and will resume immediately with the team.

The Finnish second division side, via official channel, announced that: “Hercules has signed an agreement with former Nigerian national team player and coach Daniel Amokachi.”

Amokachi, who was an assistant coach to Stephen Keshi when Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, will take over from former Hercules head coach, Pekka Haaren, who will continue as assistant coach.

Club chairman, Juho Edge, was delighted to see the Nigerian join his team – calling it a “big step forward”.

“The fact that we get our team’s head coach this great ex-player and coach is for us a big step forward,” Edge stated.

“It opens up new perspectives on our business and shakes us out of putting aside formulas.”

The former Everton player had a short stint with Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, FC Ifeanyiubah after he left the Super Eagles job last year.

Nicknamed Herkku, the Oulu-based club were recently promoted to the Finnish second tier and will look to the former Besiktas striker to lead them to promotion.

The 43-year-old has played in Turkey, England and Belgium and was also part of the Super Eagles team to the World Cup in 1994 as well as scooping the Olympic football gold medal with Nigeria in 1996.
