Unknown assailants have launched an attack on the United Nations’ stabilisation mission in Mali, killing a Nigerian peacekeeper in the process, the UN says.
In a statement, the UN said the unnamed victim “succumbed to his wounds following the armed attack by unidentified assailants” in Timbuktu.
It said another Nigerian peacekeeper was injured in the attack.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the attack, adding that he was “deeply saddened” by the peacekeeper’s death.
Mr Guterres warned that continuous attack on UN peacekeepers could amount to war crime.
In another incident on Saturday, three Chadian peacekeepers were wounded when their mine-protected vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Mali’s Kidal region.
UN established MINUSMA mission in Mali in 2012 after radical Islamist militias seized the north of the country.
More than 190 peacekeepers have died in Mali since their deployment in 2013, constituting the UN’s deadliest peacekeeping operation
