The Federal Government has appointed music star and humanitarian Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, as its National Fire Safety Ambassador.

The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja during the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Fire Safety Week.

Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Samuel Adeyemi, represented by Deputy Controller General Aliyu Tambari, said the appointment was part of efforts to deepen preventive safety and challenge the belief that fire disasters are unlikely to happen. The event had the theme “Building a Culture of Fire Safety Across Nigeria: Overcoming the ‘Not My Portion’ Mentality.”

Adeyemi said the Fire Safety Week engaged Nigerians nationwide with a message that fire prevention begins with individuals. He recalled that the programme opened with a virtual town hall, followed by the presentation of Bankers’ Cheques under the Group Life Insurance Scheme to families of fallen and injured fire officers.

The event also featured the “CG’s Cup” and medals sponsored by Kabir Lateef to motivate personnel. Officers conducted sensitisation exercises in schools, markets and major economic centres, including roadshows, drills and demonstrations.

Adeyemi described the response from Nigerians as “remarkable,” noting increased interest in safety. He said certificates and awards presented at the closing ceremony recognised institutions and individuals who had shown exceptional commitment to compliance and risk reduction.

“To the participants receiving certificates, I congratulate you,” he said, urging them to be safety ambassadors in their homes and workplaces.

He praised 2Baba, describing him as “a worthy nominee and now appointee.”

According to him, the singer’s influence would “amplify public messaging, inspire behavioural change and connect millions of Nigerians to the national fire safety agenda. As a National Fire Safety Ambassador, we expect him to inspire a new generation to embrace a culture of safety.”

Adeyemi thanked Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, civil society groups and fire officers nationwide, stressing that “safety is not an event, but a continuous responsibility.”
