World Malaria Day: Five ways to protect yourself from killer disease

As the world celebrates World Malaria Day on Tuesday, we present five ways to protect yourself from the disease which kills an estimated 300,000 people in Nigeria annually.

  1. Control mosquito breeding

There is no better way can you prevent malaria than controlling the breeding of mosquitoes (which are the primary carriers of the disease) in your environment through maintaining clean surroundings and preventing stagnation of water.

  1. Use insecticide-treated mosquito net

Another prominent way to prevent being infected with malaria is by sleeping in a treated bed-net. This will help ward off mosquitoes. Also, ensure your windows have nets too.

  1. Wear long sleeves

Put on long sleeve shirts and trousers, especially in the evening and at night. This is because the less skin that is exposed, the better.

  1. Use mosquito repellent

Use insect repellent creams or lotions particularly at night. They should be applied to any exposed parts of your skin.

  1. Kill mosquitoes before they bite

Kill as many mosquitoes as you can. The more you kill the less the risk of being infected. Kill them before the bite!
