Defence HQ, Arunma Oteh, Ali Baba following fake Mark Zuckerberg on Twitter

Mark Zuckerberg

Social media handlers for the Nigerian Armed Forces appear not to carry out basic background checks on social media accounts they follow.

If they did, they probably won’t be following a Twitter account which appears to have been set up by some con artists in the name of Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

A check by Qed.ng revealed that the Defence Headquarters, with the verified handle @DefenceInfoNG, is one of the 113k followers of @MarkZuckerbergF which claims to belong to the 32-year-old techie who was on a visit to Nigeria last week.

A lack of intelligence is demonstrated by the fact that, while Zuckerberg hardly mentions his wealth, the profile of the account plays up a “Net worth ▲ US$6.9 billion (2010)”.

One of the five tweets by the account since it was opened in October 2010 is about #hennessyartistry which the Facebook boss might never have heard about.

Besides, Zuckerberg might have dropped out of Harvard in his sophomore year, but the DHQ should expect his first post on a social media platform to read better than “Hello Twitter-Land, as well as tweeting on twitter, Don’t forget to Friend Up with your friends on Facebook!!”

Other Nigerian celebs conned into following the account include former Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Arunma Oteh, Comedian Ali Baba, and music entrepreneurs Obi Asika and Audu Maikori.

Zuckerberg is believed to exist on Twitter as @finkd.
