An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday remanded a bricklayer, Edet Imoh, in prison for allegedly raping a commercial sex worker.

The 40-year-old is charged with a two-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse and stealing.

Prosecutor, Sgt. Nicholas Akpene, informed the court that the accused allegedly raped the sex worker (name withheld) and stole her property on March 11 on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

Akpene added that the items are a BlackBerry Passport phone valued at N145,000 and a Nokia phone valued at N12,000, totaling N157,000.

He said: “The accused agreed to pay N40,000 to the sex worker but failed to do so.

“Instead of taking the sex worker to a hotel as the accused promised, he raped her on the road and also tried to strangle her.”

According to the prosecution, the offences which contravene Sections 260 and 286 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 carry a penalty of life imprisonment.

Following the accused pleading of not guilty to the offences, the magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Imoh is to be remanded in Ikoyi prison until all conditions for his bail are met.

The case was adjourned to May 16 for mention.
