MAMA 2016: Wizkid, Linda Ikeji lose to Olympic gold medallist

Nigerian singer, Wizkid, and popular blogger, Linda Ikeji, on Saturday lost the Personality of the Year award at the 2016 MTV Africa Music Award (MAMA) to South African Olympic gold medallist, Caster Semenya.

The 26-year-old Caster, in August 2016, won the gold medal in the women’s 800 metres at the Rio Olympics with a time of 1:55.28.

Her announcement as winner caused quite a stir at first because there was some confusion as to whether she was male or female when she mentioned “my wife”.

Semenya is a lesbian who married to her long-term partner, Violet Raseboya, in a traditional ceremony in December 2015.

Receiving her award, she said “and to the haters, I’m still coming.”

In October 2016, the IAAF announced that Semenya was shortlisted for women’s 2016 World Athlete of the Year.

Of course Nigerians took to Twitter to express their opinion on Wizkid and Linda losing the award category.
