3 Nigerian musicians who died at the peak of their careers

The Nigerian entertainment industry has had more than its fair share of talents that died too soon.

Death has come either by accident, sickness or some unresolved mysteries.

Here, we bring three young musicians who died at the peak of their career.

  1. DaGrin

DaGrin

Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun, aka DaGrin, was born October 21, 1987 and died April 22, 2010.

The closest the Nigerian rap scene ever had to America’s 2pac, the 22-year-old died after a car accident in Lagos.

A product of a rough background, Barack O’Grin rapped about the horrors and excitements of living in the ghetto.

He recorded two albums, Still on the Matter and Chief Executive Omota, and featured in about 30 hit songs of various Nigerian artists like 9ice, YQ. MI, Omawumi, Chuddy K and Konga.

His burial at Atan Cemetery, Yaba, Lagos drew a sea of mourners all dressed in black.

Almost seven years after his death, DaGrin’s hits like ‘If I die’, ‘Pon Pon Pon’, ‘Kondo’ and ‘Thank God’ are street anthems.

Ghetto Dreamz, a movie that told the story of his life, was released in 2011.

Goldie Harvey

Susan Oluwabimpe Harvey, better known as Goldie, was born on October 23, 1983 and died on February 14, 2013.

Beyond her music and bold fashion statements, the Ekiti-born singer appeared on Big Brother Africa StarGame in 2012, earning her eviction on the 70th day of the show.

She was said to have complained of a headache after returning from the 2013 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles and was rushed to Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island, Lagos where she gave up the ghost.

Her remains were buried at the Vaults and Gardens Cemetery, Ikoyi, Lagos on February 25, 2013.

Autopsy report indicated she suffered deep vein thrombosis.

Eric Arubayi

Nigerian gospel singer, Eric Arubayi, died at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital on February 11, 2017 after a brief illness.

Reports had it that, he complained of weak but died after been rushed to the health centre.

The West African Idols 2007 4th runner-up could be described as a classic R&B/soul artiste and songwriter.

The singer was in his mid-30s and had a wife and son.

He is known for his tracks like: ‘I Go Make Am’, ‘Mr DJ’, ‘One Love’ and One Voice’.
